Private servers are a common feature in most online games, as they allow players to set up custom game modes and exclusive player lists. Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn't yet allowed private servers for Sea of Thieves, and many players are wondering if and when that will change.
Currently, there is no in-game feature that allows you to create or host a Sea of Thieves private server. According to a developer update from Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate, private servers are something they want to include down the line. Still, the video linked above was posted in 2019, and there's been little to no news about it since then.
There's been a lot of speculation about this, suggesting that this was supposed to change in 2021, but there's still been no update from Rare, Sea of Thieves' development company.
What we do know about private servers (when they arrive) is that Rare will voluntarily give them limited functionality to encourage players to use private servers to host special events and game dynamics (like roleplaying) .
That's all there is to know about private servers in Sea of Thieves for now!
