How to EV train your Pokemon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

How to EV train your Pokemon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Effort Values (EVs) are invisible numbers added to each of your Pokemon's stats, making them stronger. Each Pokemon can only have a maximum of 510 EVs, and each stat can only have a maximum of 252 EVs. Four electric vehicles represent an additional stat point.

EV points are earned by defeating or capturing Pokemon – the EV you earn simply depends on the best stat of that particular Pokemon. For example, a Wingull will give you EV for speed. It is recommended that EVs access the Pokemon's best stats.

To check your Pokemon's EVs, go to their stat summary and press the X button. The lighter yellow hexagon is the Pokemon's base stats. The darkest yellow is the collective cast of Pokemon electric vehicles. If you see a blue hex instead, that means the Pokemon can't gain any more EVs.

You won't have a set EV number, but you can get a pretty good estimate by using the lighter yellow hexagon as a reference point.

Can I reset my EVs in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl?

How to EV train your Pokemon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

If you've just discovered EVs now and want to optimize their allocation, then good news: EVs can be reset. You just need six particular berries:

  • Pomeg Berry (reduces HP)
  • Kelpsy Berry (lowers attack)
  • Qualot Berry (defense drop)
  • Hondew Berry (lowers special attack)
  • Grepa Berry (lowers special defense)
  • Tamato Berry (reduces speed)

Each of these bays will reduce electric vehicles by 10 points. However, the first berry given will reduce that Pokémon's EV to 100 regardless of its initial value. As such, you'll only need 11 Berries to lower the EV of each stat to zero.

You can buy these berries at the Battle Park for one BP each. Of course, you can also plant them.

Each tree can bear a maximum of five berries over time. It will always give two berries after the first cycle, and one each time. The growth cycle of each of the six berries is 32 hours. You can water the trees to shorten their growth or even change the date and time of your Nintendo Switch.

How to Train Pokémon Electric Vehicles in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

1. Give them vitamins

Vitamins increase EV points by 10. There are plenty of them scattered around Sinnoh, but you can always buy them on the second floor of the Veilstone Department Store for 9 Pokédollars. Here are all the vitamins available:

  • HP Up (HP)
  • Protein (Attack)
  • Iron (Defense)
  • Calcium (special attack)
  • Zinc (Special Defense)
  • Carbos (speed)

Maxing out an EV stat from zero will require 53 Bottles of Vitamins, which is a total of 519 Pokédollars. After the Hall of Fame, you can also buy vitamins in the Battle Tower for one BP each.

2. Equip Energy Items

As mentioned, defeating or capturing certain Pokémon gives you an EV point for a particular stat. But since a stat's maximum EV is 252 points, be sure to pick up power items in the battle tower to maximize the number of EV points you receive per battle. Each Power Item will allow a Pokémon to receive eight additional EV points per battle.

  • Power weight (adds points to HP)
  • Bracer of Power (adds points to attack)
  • Belt of Power (adds points to defense)
  • Power Lens (adds points to special attack)
  • Powerband (adds points to special defense)
  • Power anklet (adds points to speed)

Also, since Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have the EXP share permanently, every Pokemon in your party gets the EV point in every battle. However, only those who hold the Power Item will receive the boost. So if they beat a Wingull with a power peg, they would instead gain nine EV points for speed.

3. Fight the right Pokemon

Now that you have your Power Items, you are ready to practice EV. Below are the six Pokémon you want to defeat and where they appear frequently:

  • Bidoof on Route 201 (HP)
  • Machop (one EV point), Machoke and Bibarel (two EV points) on Route 210 (Attack)
  • Geodude and hippos in the Ruin Manic Tunnel along Route 214 (defense)
  • Gastly in the Old Castle inside Eterna Forest (Special Attack)
  • Tentacruels (two EV points) on Route 223, north of Sunyshore City (special defense)
  • Starly in Route 201 (Speed)

All Pokemon with no EV points listed give one EV point.

And that's all you need to know! Between vitamins and Pokémon battles, there is no right method. The former is faster but expensive, and the latter is lower but will cost you next to nothing. Train your Pokemon the way you want.
