One of the first things you need to know about choosing the right counters in Pokémon Go is that not all Pokémon are created equal. There is no universal solution against them. With each subtype, moveset, and specialty comes the suggestion of a different technique to counter it. That being said, we are going to cover a couple of things in this guide.

  • Ice-Type Weaknesses and Strengths: This will cover the base resistances, weaknesses, vulnerabilities, and strengths of Ice Pokemon. This will be the go-to list when battling Ice-type Pokemon, but not always.
  • Combination of Ice-Type Weaknesses and Strengths: This part of the guide will cover the secondary types that Ice Pokémon can have, and put particular emphasis on secondary types that could alter their original weaknesses and strengths. It is essential to know if you want to know how to defeat some of the most powerful ice Pokemon.
  • Counters: In this final section of the guide, we'll cover counters for Ice Pokémon and their subtypes. It will primarily focus on Ice Pokémon with subtypes that alter normal strengths and weaknesses. This will be your go-to for best counters against Ice Pokémon and, if possible, all subtypes.
  • Weaknesses and strengths

The dynamics of Ice Pokemon can be compared to real-life science. They are weak against Fighting, Fire, Rock, and Steel, and only resist other Ice attacks. Still, there are additional stats to know about Ice-type Pokémon and attacks. The list below provides the base damage effectiveness against their respective types. If something is not listed, it can be assumed to apply standard damage/defenses.

    • Attack
      • Super Effective Against (160% Damage): Grass, Ground, Dragon, Flying
      • Not very effective against (62,5% damage): Fire, Water, Ice, Steel
    • Defend
      • Weak against (160% damage): Fire, Fighting, Rock, Steel
      • Strong Against (62,5% Damage): Ice

    Combination of weaknesses and strengths

Sometimes when Pokémon have secondary types, the weaknesses and strengths of that type can negate, magnify, or add to the weaknesses and strengths of the Pokémon's primary type. In this list, we'll specifically cover subtypes that change the original weaknesses and strengths.

    • Amplify
      • Amplifies Weakness to Fire: Grass, Bug, Steel
      • Amplifies weakness in battle: Normal, Rock, Dark, Steel
      • Amplifies Weakness to Rock: Fire, Flying, Bug
      • Amplifies Steel Weakness: Rock, Fairy
    • Negation
      • Nullifies fire weakness: fire, water, rock, dragon
      • Nullifies Fighting Weakness: Poison, Flying, Psychic, Insect
      • Nullifies Weakness to Rock: Fighting, Ground, Steel
      • Nullifies Steel Weakness: Fire, Water, Electric
      • Nullifies Ice Resistance: Grass, Ground, Flying, Dragon

    counters

The best way to counter a Pokémon is to know its weaknesses and strengths, which are listed in the previous two sections of the guide. However, as mentioned earlier, some of these weaknesses and resistances can be modded with subtypes. So the question is, what do you do if the Pokemon has multiple types? Well, find another counter, of course!

We will cover a few points with the lists below. First, we'll explain how to counter basic ice Pokémon. Next, we'll list the best counters for all Ice Pokémon subtypes.

    Best Ice Counters

For Ice Pokemon with no additional subtypes, you'll be looking to use Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel attacks and Avoid Ice attacks. Note that these advantages do not mean that you must counter or avoid countering with these types of Pokémon, but with these types of attacks in particular.

Of the four Ice Pokémon weaknesses, only Fire and Steel are resistant to Ice attacks. For this reason, Pokémon Fire and Steel should be considered your standard roster against a trainer who specializes in Pokémon Ice.

    Best Subtype Counters

Since Ice Pokémon have four weaknesses, trainers can use counters that negate them. While this might be an advanced technique to use against other unsuspecting trainers, we must remember that each type has its own weaknesses and strengths. This means that if certain subtypes can negate a weakness, it could amplify other weaknesses or add new ones. The list below explains all the best counters for each Ice Pokémon subtype. Remember, as stated above, the standard roster against Ice Pokemon is Fire and Steel.

    • Ice + Electric: Electric Pokémon negate the Ice Pokémon's weakness to Steel, but add a weakness to the Ground Pokémon. Since Ground Pokémon are immune to Electric attacks, they are your best option against Ice + Electric Pokémon. However, the standard file would also be effective.
    • Ice + Dragon: Dragon Pokemon negates Ice Pokemon's weakness to Fire, but adds weakness to Fairy and other Dragon Pokemon. Because they're both tough and effective against these Pokemon, it's best to use Steel or Fairy tokens.
    • Ice + Grass: Grass Pokémon are weak against Fire Pokémon, so the combination of these two types makes them particularly vulnerable to Fire attacks. Use these if you're battling an Ice + Grass Pokemon.
    • Ice + Fighting: Dragon Pokemon negates the Ice Pokemon weakness to Rock, but adds weaknesses to Flying, Psychic, and Fairy. You can use the standard list or any of these three against Ice + Fighting Pokémon.
    • Ice + Dark: Dark Pokémon are weak against Fighting Pokémon, so combining these two types makes them particularly vulnerable to Fighting Attacks. Use these if you're fighting an Ice + Black Pokémon.
    • Ice + Poison: Poison Pokemon negate the Ice Pokemon's Fighting weaknesses, but add Ground and Psychic weaknesses. Nevertheless, we recommend using the standard list against Ice + Poison.
    • Ice + Ground: Ground Pokemon negate the Ice Pokemon's weakness to Rock, but add weaknesses to Water and Grass. However, Water is not resistant to Ice or Ground attacks, so we recommend using the standard list or Grass Pokemon.
    • Ice + Normal: Normal Pokémon are weak against Fighting Pokémon, so the combination of these two types makes them particularly vulnerable to Fighting attacks. Use these if you're fighting an Ice + Normal Pokémon.
    • Ice + Fire: Fire Pokémon are weak against Rock Pokémon, so the combination of these two types makes them especially vulnerable to rock attacks. Use these if you're fighting an Ice + Rock Pokemon. Don't use Fire Pokemon because adding the Fire type negates Ice's weakness.
    • Ice + Flying: Fire Pokémon are weak against Rock Pokémon, so the combination of these two types makes them particularly vulnerable to rock attacks. Use these if you're fighting an Ice + Flying Pokémon. Don't use Fighting Pokemon because adding the Flying type negates Ice's weakness.
    • Ice + Psychic: Psychic Pokémon negates Pokémon Ice's weakness in Combat, but adds weakness to Bug, Ghost, and Dark. Since Black Pokémon are immune to Psychic attacks, they are your best option against Ice + Psychic Pokémon. However, if your opponent uses a lot of ice attacks, you should use the standard list instead.
    • Ice + Bug: Bug Pokémon are weak against Fire and Rock Pokémon, so the combination of these two types makes them particularly vulnerable to either type of attack. Use a Fire or Rock Pokemon if you're fighting an Ice + Bug Pokemon.
    • Ice + Rock: Pokémon Rock are weak against Pokémon Fighting and Steel, so the combination of these two types makes them particularly vulnerable to either type of attack. Use either a Fighting Pokemon or a Steel Pokemon if you're battling Ice + Rock Pokemon. It's also worth mentioning that Pokemon Ice + Rock are considered the weakest combination type in all Pokemon games, due to their very limited advantages.
    • Ice + Ghost: Ghost-types are immune to battle attacks, so don't use them against Ice + Ghost Pokemon at all. We recommend sticking to the standard list here, as no Fire or Steel weaknesses are negated, and the Ghost Pokémon adds no resistances to them.
    • Ice + Water: Water Pokemon are resistant to Fire and Steel attacks, so you should completely ignore the standard roster of these Pokemon. The only two Pokemon types that are effective against Water + Ice with no weaknesses against them are Fighting and Electric.
    • Ice + Steel: Steel Pokémon are weak against Fire and Fighting Pokémon, so the combination of these two types makes them particularly vulnerable to either type of attack. Use a Fire or Fighting Pokemon if you're fighting an Ice + Steel Pokemon.
    • Ice + Fairy: Fairy Pokémon are weak against Steel Pokémon, so the combination of these two types makes them especially vulnerable to Steel attacks. Use these if you're fighting an Ice + Fairy Pokémon.

With this guide, you should be ready to defeat any targeted Ice-type opponent! In summary, you've probably realized that the best Pokemon and Attacks to use are likely to be Fire-type, with Steel-type coming in a close second.
