Weaknesses and Counters of Fairy Pokémon in Pokémon Go

Weaknesses and Counters of Fairy Pokémon in Pokémon Go

Fairy Pokémon are one of the most powerful types in Pokémon Go because they only have one true weakness (Pokémon Ground). Their attacks are boosted by rainy weather, so expect to see plenty of other trainers using them if the weather predicts! This guide will help you get through the toughest battles against any type of Fairy Pokémon, including some of the strongest combinations!

One of the first things you need to know about choosing the right counters in Pokémon Go is that not all Pokémon are created equal. There is no universal solution against them. With each subtype, moveset, and specialty comes the suggestion of a different technique to counter it. That being said, we are going to cover a couple of things in this guide.

  • Fairy Type Weaknesses and Strengths: This will cover the base resistances, weaknesses, vulnerabilities, and strengths of Fairy Pokemon. This will be the go-to list when battling Fairy-type Pokemon, but not always.
  • Combination of Fairy-Type Weaknesses and Strengths: This part of the guide will cover the secondary types that Fairy Pokémon can have, and put particular emphasis on secondary types that could alter their original weaknesses and strengths. This is crucial information if you want to know how to defeat some of the most powerful Fairy Pokémon.
  • Counters: In this final section of the guide, we'll cover counters for Fairy Pokémon and their subtypes. It will mainly focus on the Fairy Pokémon with subtypes that modify normal strengths and weaknesses. This will be your go-to for best counters against Fairy Pokémon, and if possible, all subtypes.
  • Weaknesses and strengths

The dynamics of Fairy Pokémon have nothing to do with real-life science to compare. They are weak against Poison and Steel, and resist Flying, Insect, Dragon, and Dark attacks. Still, there are additional stats to know about Fairy-type Pokémon and attacks. The list below provides the base damage effectiveness against their respective types. If something is not listed, it can be assumed to apply standard damage/defenses.

    • Attack
      • Super Effective Against (160% Damage): Fighting, Dragon, Dark
      • Not Very Effective Against (62,5% Damage): Fire, Poison, Steel
    • Defend
      • Weak against (160% damage): Poison, Steel
      • Strong Against (62,5% Damage): Fighting, Bug, Dark
      • Immunity to (<35% damage): Dragon

    Combination of weaknesses and strengths

Sometimes when Pokémon have secondary types, the weaknesses and strengths of that type can negate, magnify, or add to the weaknesses and strengths of the Pokémon's primary type. In this list, we'll specifically cover subtypes that change the original weaknesses and strengths.

    • Amplify
      • Amplifies Weakness to Poison: Grass
      • Amplifies Steel Weakness: Ice, Rock
    • Negation
      • Nullifies poison weakness: Poison, Ground, Rock, Ghost, Steel
      • Nullifies Steel Weakness: Fire, Water, Electric
      • Nullifies combat resistance: normal, ice, rock, dark, steel
      • Nullifies Insect Resistance: Grass, Psychic, Dark
      • Nullifies Dark Resistance: Psychic, Ghost

    counters

The best way to counter a Pokémon is to know its weaknesses and strengths, which are listed in the previous two sections of the guide. However, as mentioned earlier, some of these weaknesses and resistances can be modded with subtypes. So the question is, what do you do if the Pokemon has multiple types? Well, find another counter, of course!

We will cover a few points with the lists below. First, we'll explain how to counter basic Fairy Pokémon. Next, we'll list the best counters for all Fairy Pokémon subtypes.

    Best Fairy Counters

For Fairy Pokémon with no additional subtypes, you'll want to use Poison and Steel attacks and avoid Fighting, Bug, Dragon, and Dark attacks. Note that these advantages do not mean that you must counter or avoid countering with these types of Pokémon, but with these types of attacks in particular.

Since Poison and Steel Pokémon are both effective against Fairy Pokémon and resistant to Fairy attacks, Poison and Steel Pokémon should be considered your standard roster against a trainer who specializes in Fairy Pokémon.

    Best Subtype Counters

Since Fairy Pokémon have four weaknesses, trainers can use counters that negate them. While this can be an advanced technique to use against other unsuspecting trainers, we must remember that each type has its own weaknesses and strengths. This means that if certain subtypes can negate a weakness, it could amplify other weaknesses or add new ones. The list below explains all the best counters for each Fairy Pokémon subtype. Remember, as stated above, the standard roster against Fairy Pokemon is Poison and Steel.

    • Fairy + Ice: Ice Pokémon are weak against Steel Pokémon, so the combination of these two types makes them especially vulnerable to Steel attacks. Use these if you're fighting a Fairy + Ice Pokemon.
    • Fairy + Dragon: The Dragon type only adds to Fairy's weaknesses and does not influence her strengths. It would be best to use the standard roster against Fairy + Dragon Pokemon.
    • Fairy + Grass: Ice Pokemon are weak against Poison Pokemon, so the combination of these two types makes them especially vulnerable to Poison Attacks. Use these if you're battling a Fairy + Grass Pokemon.
    • Fairy + Fighting: The Fighting type does not negate Fairy's weaknesses, but simply adds them. It's best to use the standard roster in this situation, but you can also try one of Fighting's weaknesses like Flying or Psychic to limit attack options.
    • Fairy+Dark: Adding the dark type does not affect the weaknesses of the fairy to a large extent. The standard roster would be good against Fairy + Dark Pokemon.
    • Fairy + Poison: Poison Pokemon negate Fairy's weakness to Poison, so don't use them as you normally would. Instead, use a Steel Pokemon because it's immune to Poison attacks.
    • Fairy + Ground: Ground Pokemon negates Fairy's weakness to Poison, so it's best not to use them. Steel still does decent damage, but is weak against ground attacks. It's best to use one of Ground's weaknesses against Fairy + Ground, such as Water, Grass, or Ice. Grass is probably the best because it resists ground attacks.
    • Fairy + Normal: Adding the Normal type negates Fairy resistance to Fighting Pokémon, but we highly recommend sticking to the standard list against Fairy + Normal Pokémon.
    • Fairy + Fire: Fire Pokemon negate Fairy's weakness to Steel, so avoid using them. Since Poison is usually combined with Grass or Bugs, we also recommend avoiding Poison Pokémon. In this situation, it is better to use a Fire weakness such as Water or Rock.
    • Fairy + Flying: The Flying type does not negate Fairy's weaknesses, but simply adds them. It's best to use the standard list in this situation, but you can also try one of the flying weaknesses like Electric, Ice, or Rock.
    • Fairy + Psychic: Psychic Pokémon are weak against ghost attacks, but we recommend sticking to the standard list in this situation. Only use one of Psychic's weaknesses if a Poison or Steel Pokémon is unavailable.
    • Fairy + Bug: The Bug type does not negate Fairy's weaknesses, but simply adds them. Still, Poison Pokemon are resistant to Fairy and Bug attacks, so they're the best option against Fairy + Bug Pokemon.
    • Fairy + Rock: Rock Pokémon are weak against Steel Pokémon, so the combination of these two types makes them particularly vulnerable to Steel attacks. Use these if you're battling a Fairy + Rock Pokemon.
    • Fairy + Ghost: Ghost Pokemon negate Fairy's weakness to Poison. This adds weakness to other Ghost Pokemon, but they are weak against ghost attacks from a Ghost + Fairy Pokemon. The best type to use against these Pokémon are Steel types.
    • Fairy + Water: Water Pokémon negate Fairy's weakness to Steel. Your best options in this circumstance would be to use a Grass and/or Poison Pokemon.
    • Fairy + Steel: These Pokémon are considered the strongest combination type in the Pokémon universe. Adding Steel completely changes Fairy's weaknesses and strengths (and Steel is immune to Poison), so ignore the standard Fairy + Steel Pokemon roster. The best counters against Fairy + Steel are Fire and Rock Pokémon. Combining the two would be best, but play with a Fire Pokémon if you go on the attack and a Ground Pokémon if you play Defensive.
    • Fairy + Electric: Electric Pokemon negate Fairy's weakness to Steel. Your best options in this circumstance would be to use a Ground Pokemon if you're playing Defense or a Poison Pokemon if you're playing Offense.

With this guide, you should be ready to defeat any Fairy type opponent! In summary, you have probably realized that the best Pokémon and Attacks to use will probably be Steel-type. Never bring a Dragon Pokémon to a fairy fight!
