What does the

At the start of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you are asked what item you would bring with you to a deserted island. You might wonder what impact this choice actually has once you've settled into your new home, but it's actually a lot simpler than you might think.

Here's what you need to know about that fateful choice you made at the start of the game.

What does 'thing you would take with you' mean in Animal Crossing New Horizons?

In your earliest moments in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you'll meet Timmy and Tommy, the close relatives (presumably, sons) of everyone's most hated video game owner, Tom Nook.

They'll ask you a few questions, including your name, date of birth, and obviously the one thing you'd likely bring to an abandoned island. The selections presented to you are as follows:

  • "A sleeping bag"
  • "A lamp"
  • "Food"
  • "Something to Kill Time"

You can choose anything at this point, but it doesn't matter. Once you lightly enter the first section of the game, after being greeted by Tom Nook and the other villagers, you will receive all of these items as welcome gifts, regardless of your choice.

Once you've collected all of your goodies, be sure to arrange them in your tent as you wish.

And don't worry about the small space you are given at this point; you'll be able to upgrade to a house pretty quickly! You just need to complete Tom Nook's first task by racking up 5000 miles by any means.

That's what you need to know about the first big choice you make in New Horizons, and be sure to check out our growing collection of Animal Crossing: New Horizons guides for more tips and tricks, including:
