Roguelikes are a dime a dozen on the PlayStation Store, but Thy Sword appeals despite the genre's ubiquity. This single-screen side-scroller allows you to eliminate enemies in different locations to progress through different levels, with many environments culminating in larger-than-life boss battles. There's a casual mode that makes the difficulty more manageable, but you can enjoy a more punishing adventure if you prefer.

Combat is simplistic yet entertaining, requiring you to defend with "your sword" before countering your foes. Some villains, such as zombies, require you to use a special move to strip their skulls, preventing them from resurrecting themselves. Other enemies have the ability to poison you, while the aforementioned boss fights use distinctive patterns and can be tricky at best at first. Gold can be collected and gambled or traded for loot, giving you the necessary buffs in battle.

It's not a spectator, with environments lacking in detail and rudimentary sprite work. But the loop is addictive while the adventure lasts, and you'll definitely want to run through the countryside a few times before losing interest completely. Ratalaika continues to provide the PS4 and PS Vita with some likable time-wasters, and while there are undoubtedly higher-level roguelikes on the platforms, it's still fun.
